Blooms Taxonomy:

After research I have found that Blooms Taxonomy is a major foundation for education. Although there have been some who have made alterations, the basic foundation is still the same and very important to the Adult Instructor. Using the three domains, Cognitive, Affective and Psycho-motor, the lesson planning can be developed to meet the needs of the Adult Learners. Knowing that each of the domain levels lead to the next until the highest is reached is a guide to an Instructor on planning and building lessons. This is a must have in the tool box of an Adult Instructor.

Characteristics of Adult Learners:

Adult Learners in North America are increasing in numbers every year. Colleges and universities are scrambling to meet the diverse needs this group of learners have. Planning the course for the adult learner has to be developed in response to the immediate needs. Adult learners have their own personal view of the world and generally know what they need to survive or succeed. Past and present experiences form their view which in turn develops the adult learners’ motivation and barriers to learning. Every adult learner needs to feel respected and appreciated no matter what their needs are.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment:

I have memories of classes that did not make feel at ease and that is why I chose this topic. Reading that Instructors can gain the learners attention right away by using several possible scenario’s, should result in making learners feel at ease in their surroundings. Adult learners have knowledge already and most would like to share it under the right circumstances. They will involve themselves if they know that there are no “dumb questions” and there will be no sarcasm from anyone. I like the idea of creating dialogue in the classroom so the diverse needs can discovered and met.

Assessments:

Pre-Assessments are vital in setting the stage for the lesson because it provides much needed information to the Adult Instructor. Utilizing that information in the class will make the Adult Learners know that they are contributing and they will involve themselves in the lesson even more.

Post-Assessments are very useful in making sure the lesson presented has “hit the mark” with the Adult Learners. Having them write highlights of the lesson will show what has been learned. Also letting them write about any thing that was not understood will point out areas that need fine tuning by the Instructor.

Planning:

I chose planning because I want to be able to design lessons that will deliver knowledge to all in the class. The lesson needs to help the Adult Learner gain knowledge in the best way possible using various methods. Turning the class into a community will set the stage for sharing and caring and bring lasting results. Involving the learners in mid lesson check ups, such as letting them create the questions of the day, will indicate the level of knowledge retention. The rewarding part of planning is being able to help the Adult Learners apply the knowledge into their lives.

Emerging Roles:

 

        My initial reaction to all this was that I had “dove into the deep end”. My past education consists of formal education from over forty years ago. Those same forty years have been full of experiential learning blessing me with more knowledge than I had realized.  Researching, I found that the Teacher role that I associated with education, has diversified into several roles. Adult educators now have to be facilitators, mentors, demonstrators, moderators, designers, tech supporters, and a coach. They also have to be transparent with the fact that they are learning right along with the Adult Learners. Respecting the life experiences of Adult Learners as a valuable asset is a must do for today’s Instructors.  I realize that being an Adult Educator is going to require constant learning and adapting just to meet the needs of Adult Learners. I am also sure that more roles will be added to the job description of a successful Adult Educator …probably tomorrow!

Emerging Trends:

 

        As a miner, I have noticed the increased use of technology with on the job computers, even on the heavy equipment. I had to re-qualify on all the equipment which meant that I had to complete and pass courses on the computer before I tested on each piece of equipment. Computers on the huge shovels now show where the ore is, how much each bucket weighs, GPS position, which truck you are loading and how much material has been loaded. I have observed that many workers my age are finding it too hard to adapt and keep up with the technological changes that are always advancing. Many experienced workers are choosing early retirement because upgrade courses are not designed for the older adult. This is happening just when there is a looming worker shortage on the horizon here in British Columbia. I think it is a shame to see all that talent/experience lost to retirement instead of being shared through educational programs. I hope to make a difference in my trade by developing courses that will meet the needs of the older Adult Learners. Hopefully I will help many of them to keep pace with the technology advances in the mining industry and stay working longer. The internet is bursting with new information and programs. MOOC (massive open online courses) are loaded with information that is constantly being updated for the community of learners. New technology is happening so fast that one is in a constant state of tech learning. In summary, I have come to the realization that one must be a life long learner to be a successful Instructor of education.

Web-Conference:

 

The Skype face-to-face with my learning partner, Sherryl Eagle, was very enlightening as well as uplifting. Her summary on the emerging roles of the Adult Educators brought up some good points. Adult educators, as we have known them in the past, are having to change to meet the new types of situations that we now face. Gone are the days that lessons were given from the front of the class only. Many new ways of dispensing knowledge are forcing educators to adapt their method of showing new learners how to learn. This situation is ongoing and changing often which is a challenge for the profession to produce solutions. The Trends emerging can be brand new today and become old news tomorrow. More online courses and MOOC style courses are rapidly expanding the resource library for the learner. It seems that technology’s rapid growth is meeting the surprising demand that learners have for face-to-face personalized learning. With all the new technology that is changing how we learn the need to humanize the interactions still resonates. In summary we decided that there was one thing for sure to happen…….constant changes and new challenges in the Roles and Trends of education.

As I sit and reflect on my life, I find myself humbled. Humbled by the business that takes place all around me, the real fight for life and struggle against death, the palpable emotions of situations I often find myself in, and the incredible strength of those whom I work alongside. It’s the stuff movies are made of and it is truly amazing to watch.

Working in an Emergency Department creates such an interesting outlook on life. One that knows and understands all to well the fragility of every single breath and the vital importance of embracing all aspects of living, even the scary ones. We are the truest definition of realism. Would I like to wrap my kids in bubble wrap and never let them out? Yes. Do I? No. Instead they can be found jumping on the bed, because let’s face it, it’s awesome. Riding their bikes outside…

Reflecting, to learn more

Objective:

I have chosen the quote “reflecting on what we do ultimately leads to more informed and perhaps better practice” Merriam & Brockett (2007 P. 50) The Profession and Practice of Adult Education, because it speaks to me. All my life I have valued every experience, good or bad, and want to glean everything I can from them. So much more so for the bad ones as I really don’t wish to repeat those ones. I try to practice reflecting in a situation while it is happening but will always reflect on the situation after. Donald Schon elaborates on these two methods reflecting in and reflecting on in his book The Reflective Practitioner. How Professionals Think in Action.(1983). Boud, Keogh and Walker sum it up this way; “It seems that we all recognize the importance of these activities in our lives. We say that we need time to catch up with ourselves, to take stock,to make sense of what has happened, or to share other peoples’ ideas on an experience” Boud, Keogh and Walker,(2013 P. 8) Reflection: Turning Experience into Learning.

Reflective:

We all reflect on our experiential learning, some more than others. The goal is to get everyone reflecting enough to produce knowledge that they can take away from the experience. The Adult Educator has to adapt their methods of teaching to emphasize the value of Reflective Practice so that the learner will want to include it in their learning method. I thought that I had a good understanding about reflecting, but after researching I find that there are many things about reflecting that I did not know about.

Interpretive:

When I read the quote from page 50, my beliefs were being confirmed from my past experiences and that pleased me. Reading more about reflecting, as seen by others, also brings satisfaction in that I see there is more for me to learn and apply. Going forward I will need to use the reflective practice more than ever before. It won’t be look at what I know as an Instructor, but look at what we can learn together.

Decisional:

The Adult Educator will have to participate in reflecting even while it is being taught to or experienced by the Learner. I can see where this would be a mentoring/learning experience for me as an Instructor. Because it is always evolving, the Adult Educator will have to ensure to include any advances in their own life long learning journey.
